Don't call me a mindless philosepher, you overweight glob of greese. - C-3PO (Star Wars)

In another flash of insanity, I decided to build my own lifesize R2-D2 replica. I am a member of the worldwide R2 Builders Club.

It started back in 2005 while at Star Wars Celebration 3, I wondered into the R2 Builders Club room and thought it was so cool to see completed R2 and others in stages of completion. I took a brochure home with me and said 'someday'.

A couple months later, I started the research phase, trying to decide what I should do and what all of the options were. Almost a year later, I bought the first part - the dome. It was a solid aluminum dome. I didn't know how I would cut out all of those pieces, as my previous experience with a Dremel tool was not a pretty picture.

Anyway, because of Celebration 3, there was more demand for individual components so various builders would be offering up each little piece. I had anticipated it taking a couple of years to get everything, but it took just over a year to acquire everything. It then took me another 6 months to get it all together.

I ended up not using that original dome, as a builder offered laser cut versions. My R2 replica is made entirely of alumninum, so he's very solid and heavy. I use heavy duty wheelchair motors and various other electronic pieces, which I knew nothing about before building this.

And I'm not really done. I have an interface arm, periscope and opening doors I'd like to do someday.
